How To Style Second-Day Hair

While you can’t beat the feeling of freshly washed hair, we all know that one of the major secrets to healthier strands is to wash less. (Our hairdresser tells us just about every time we go.) So, we took it upon ourselves to train our hair. The result? Fewer washes and more messy buns.

What is Second Day Hair?

It’s about as simple as it sounds. Second day hair describes how your hair falls on the day after washing it. Don’t be surprised if you notice that your second day hair looks and feels better than right after washing it. On the second day, your hair has had time to fully dry, your hair’s natural oils have returned, and your hair’s natural shape is restored. That said, you may find that second day hair is easier to style and maintain, regardless of your hair type. Better yet, there are plenty of simple and fun ways to style your second day hair.

While a messy bun is an easy hairstyle, we can’t rely on it forever. We asked one of our stylists to share her tricks to styling second-day hair (and looking great on our team Zoom calls).

4 Tips for Second-Day Hair

When it comes to second-day old hair, there are four simple ways to bring new life to it.‌

1. Get rid of grease.

Using a good clarifying detox shampoo on wet hair in the shower isn’t the only solution for how to get rid of greasy hair or oily hair. Believe it or not, a shower isn’t the only way to refresh your scalp and your hair strands. One of our favorite (and easiest) ways to get rid of grease is with Living Proof’s Perfect hair Day™ Dry Shampoo. This refreshing spray actually helps clean hair, while eliminating sweat, odor, and oil. Tiffany recommends starting with Dry Shampoo. Simply shake the can a little bit to activate and spray 6-10 inches away from your dry hair. Then, wait 30 seconds before massaging or brushing through. (This gives the powders time to activate and work their magic.)

And speaking of powders, don’t let the white stuff scare you. We formulated our dry shampoo with oil-absorbing powders and a powder removal system to help prevent scalp buildup.

2. Tame frizz.

Whether you have curly hair, thick hair, or thin hair, second- or third-day hair can have a life of its own. (No really, where did all of that crazy flyaway hair suddenly come from?) Tiffany recommends taming frizzy hair with No Frizz Instant De-Frizzer. It’s a dry conditioning spray that instantly tames up to 92% of frizz on dry hair while adding softness and shine. Just spray in a sweeping motion, focusing on the mid-shaft of your strands to the ends.

Pro tip: You can also help prevent frizzy hair by sleeping on a silk pillowcase, or browsing our entire collection of anti frizz hair products.

3. Refresh next-day curls.

If you have a wavy or curly hair type, you may find your hair feeling a little flat after a good night’s sleep. (Goodbye, bounce?) To restore curly hair in the morning, Tiffany assured us that you can scrunch your curls or waves right back into place. For a curl refresher, try No Frizz Smooth Styling Spray. It’s a smoothing, styling spray that eliminates frizz by blocking humidity. Spray a little bit of this styling product it throughout strands and manually scrunch and twirl your hair into a curl or loose wave. If you need to add texture and volume to your flat or fine hair, try using some volumizing hairspray.

4. Condition and protect.

For one final step, Tiffany swears by Restore Perfecting Spray. Not only does it protect hair from damaging UV rays, but it’s also extra conditioning. Oh, and it keeps your unwashed hair smelling fresh, so you don’t have to worry on day four.

5 Second Day Hairstyles to Try

Ready to make your bathroom feel like an at-home salon for your second day hair? Here are five second day hairstyles you’ll love.

1. Looped Half Bun

This is a quick, easy, and satisfyingly lazy way to style your second day hair. Spray a small amount of dry shampoo in your roots and massage it in with your fingers. Before lowering your arms after one last final morning stretch, collect the top third of your hair and loop it into a miniature bun.

2. Beach Waves

You don’t have to make a trip to the coast to get those natural beach waves. Your second day hair’s natural oils and restored shape pair perfectly with a little bit of our Dry Volume and Texture spray and a few hair tousles to complete that effortless beach day look. If you want a little more curl in your beachy hair waves, you can use a curling iron. Be sure to use a heat protection spray before applying any heat.

3. Low Ponytail

If you’re tired of the classic messy bun that sits on the top of your head, try styling a chic, low ponytail for your second day hair look. Part your hair to the side and pull it into a low ponytail. For some extra volume, lightly tousle the top or your hair.

4. Braids

From fishtail braids to rope braids, your second day hair can thrive with any braided style and a little bit of dry shampoo. Sleeping on your braids can even give your third day hair an added texture and feel that’s equally easy to style.

5. Hair Accessories

Looking for an extra hair flair? Consider accessorizing your locks. Put your hair up into a messy bun and style it with either your favorite headband or hair scarf. For extra effortless styling, you can leave some hair tendrils down to frame your face.

Whether you want added texture or some curls, you can use our Full Dry Volume and Texture Spray to help style your hair and give it a nice refresh.
