When and why is it important for a product to be sulfate-free?

You've probably heard a lot about sulfates and generally think they are bad for hair. You should watch out for sulfates in shampoos as when they are used in lathering, cleansing products they can strip hair of its natural surface oils, making it feel rough, dry and brittle. Sulfates can also strip the scalp of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. Examples of commonly used sulfate ingredients that can be stripping include: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, and Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate.  You should watch out for these in shampoos.

Sulfates do not inflict damage on hair when used in conditioners or treatments.  When used in these products they actually help make hair smoother, softer and visibly healthier.

Sulfates in conditioners and treatments do not damage chemical treatments or color.  Characterizing them as not good for your hair in these types of products is incorrect.

Works For Me
Posted by jean on January 08, 2017

I received a sample of this and after one use immediately ordered it. I use many of the living proof products and have been happy with almost all. But lately medication for a thyroid condition has made my hair extremely dry. This has helped tremendously. I have a lot less breakage and my hair is manageable again. I also use the Timeless pre-treatment shampoo. I'm glad that living proof provide samples of new products. It gives us a chance to see what will work with our hair. I have recommended these products to everyone I know.

My hair is saved!
Posted by Staci on September 23, 2016

Several months ago I figured out that in my attempts to make my hair smoother and less frizzy, I was actually damaging it by slathering on silicone after silicone. So I cut out all products containing silicone and switched to Living Proof. I will be the first to admit that their products are hit or miss. This stuff, however, truly does seem to have restored my hair which is fine, prone to breakage, frizzy at the ends but grease-prone at the roots. For 3 months, I used this solely as my styling product pre-blowdry (with a little Aveda Dry Remedy oil on the ends). Even my hairdresser has remarked at how much thicker my hair seems now. The only downfall seems to be that it's a tad heavy, particularly at the roots.

Best Leave in Conditioner
Posted by Ashley on July 10, 2015

After falling in love with the Restore hair mask, this was the next thing I tried. Because of my hair type (thick, long, curly) I always use a leave in conditioner after I wash my hair. This works wonderfully. I've tried all the big salon names and they don't compare to this at all. LOVE it!
