Are You Protecting Your Stands from the Sun?

On sunny summer days, one of the first things we do is slather sunscreen all over our bodies. By now, we’re all well-versed on the damaging effects that the sun can have on our skin. But, have you ever thought about your strands?

Even though your hair doesn’t technically “burn,” UV rays can still damage your hair – starting with the cuticle – leaving your locks feeling dry, damaged, and brittle. If you don’t protect your hair with UV-filtering hair products, the sun can actually shift your color (hello, brassy hair) and change your texture (ahem, frizz).

Here are some of our favorite hacks for keeping your hair healthy and hydrated.‌

Start with the scalp.

If you’ve been exposed to a lot of sun lately, chances are, your scalp may be feeling dry, itchy, or even a little flakey. Since healthy hair starts at the scalp, it’s important to nourish this often-forgotten part of your head. Our Restore Dry Scalp Treatment is a leave-in treatment that delivers instant hydration and lasting relief from dry scalp irritation.

Shield the sun.

In the same way that we add sunscreen to block UV rays, you can create a shield for your strands. Our Restore Instant Protection is a weightless spray that adds shine while protecting against heat and UV damage. Keep it in your beach bag, right by that sunblock, so you always have it on-hand.

Wear a hat. Baseball caps and straw hats do double-duty in the summer. Half style, half hair protection. And the best part? You don’t even have to worry about frizz or flyaways.

Prevent (or reverse) damage.

Don’t panic if you’ve already done some damage. It’s not too late to prevent or reverse dry, damaged hair. Add a mask into your shower routine to repair your hair. We recommend our Restore Repair Mask; it deeply nourishes while reversing and protecting from damage. To combat any residual frizz, we recommend any of our frizzy hair products, from frizz-free shampoo to deep conditioner, to retain moisture and shine.

Wash less.

If your hair is already feeling dry or damaged from the strong summer sun, you can prevent further damage by washing your hair less. Or, at least just not washing your hair more (as we often tend to in the hot summer).
