So, what are sulfates? Sulfates are strong cleansing agents that have been used in all sorts of cleaning products and detergents, including shampoo. Those against sulfates believe it’s too harsh on hair, especially if you color it. Saint Louis notes:

In May, on the ‘Today’ show, Anthony Dickey, a hairstylist, suggested that traditional sulfate-rich shampoos can ‘give color a bad name’ and create frizz. ‘All shampoos should be sulfate free,’ he said.

‘Everything should be,’ Hoda Kotb, the co-host, replied.

At Web sites like naturallycurly.com, consumers fret that the harsh sulfates in shampoos, commonly listed on labels as sodium laureth sulfate and ammonium laureth sulfate, have left their finicky curls a dried-out, poufy mess.

Later on, Saint Louis writes how not everyone is jumping on the sulfate-free bandwagon. She quotes Perry Romanowski, a cosmetic chemist, as saying, “Any time you expose hair color to water, hair swells up and some color can leak out… the shampoo that you use is not really going to pull color out appreciably more than anything else.”

The blog, “The Beauty Brains,” goes into why sulfates are used in shampoos and they believe that while sulfates do no real harm, using sulfate free shampoos is a more gentle option for your hair:

A potential downside of using sulfates is that they can dry out your hair and skin. Sulfate free formulas can be milder because they don’t strip the natural oils out of your skin as much.

When you go dancing, you overheat your body which causes you to sweat more. Couple that with the fact that alcohol stimulates your sweat glands and you can bet that your hair will definitely be damp by the end of the night (and it will most likely dry squashed against a pillow). Not exactly a pleasant sight.

Your hair goes through a vast amount of stress in the cold, dry winter months. If you’ve noticed that your hair seems a lot duller and not as shiny as it used to be, that’s because the cold makes it harder for your hair follicles to secrete the natural oils that are usually found on your hair. Also, the warm, dry interior environment sucks all the moisture out of your hair, which provides the perfect conditions for static.

What can you do to make sure your hair stays as healthy as it can during these harsh months?

1. The most important thing you can do is condition your hair. Break out a leave-in conditioner once in awhile which also helps with split ends—they tend to pop up more when your hair is dry. The No Frizz Leave-In Conditioner may do just the trick!

2. It’s best to avoid heat styling your hair as much as you can. You’re drying your hair out when you use a blow dryer, curling iron, or flat iron so imagine how much that damages your hair when there’s very little moisture in the air? If you depend on heat styling your hair, think about getting a humidifier in your house. Also avoid using hot water when washing your hair—tepid water or better yet, cold water, is the best to temperature to keep your hair shiny and smooth.

3. Silicones, once again, come up as a culprit of most hair issues. Initially, it may seem as if your hair is shinier and smoother, but they can have a drying effect on hair. Luckily, Living Proof has no silicones in any of their products!

4. Be gentle when handling your hair. Use a wide-toothed comb or your fingers to break up tangles. Your hair is a lost more dry and brittle around this time so it’s important to not be too rough on it.

5. Wear a hat or a scarf! Both the sun and the wind can cause hair damage. The sun is actually closer to the earth during the winter so don’t assume you only have to worry about UV damage in the summer. Also, winds can cause tangles and snags in wavy and curly hair.
