A trip to the salon should always end like it does in commercials: the hairstylist spins your chair around to face the mirror, and you gush over your brand new haircut. Sometimes, however, the trip plays out like a tragedy: you see your new look and immediately want to curl up in a ball and cry. The singer Pink recently blasted her stylist on Twitter, going as far as saying her hair was “butchered.” What exactly can you do in this situation?

Follow these four steps and you can make the most of this situation without going into hiding until your hair grows out.

1. Ask yourself, “Was there enough understanding and communication between myself and my stylist?”

Looking back, most people realize the problem happened even before the hairstylist snipped that first bit of hair. It’s imperative that you describe in full detail the look you want. To make sure the stylist gets your message crystal clear, bring along a visual aid of your desired look.

2. Don’t leave the salon without saying something.

A lot of people are worried about hurting their stylist’s feelings, but stylists have to deal with so many different people on a daily basis, that they’ve developed a thicker skin than you might think. Express your disappointment before leaving the salon so the stylist can make the necessary adjustments.

3. Ask for a second opinion.

Sometimes you look at yourself in a much more critical light than others. If the stylist tried to right the wrong, and it’s still not to your liking, ask your friend for their opinion. You might realize that the only person who doesn’t like your new cut is you.

4. Make the most of it.

When all else fails, hold your head high and make the best of it. If you think a different hair color will make the cut look better, go for it. If you find that using a hair band changes the look completely, stock up on hair bands. If you desperately want your hair to be longer, you can use extensions until your hair has grown out a little.

A lot of celebrities have expressed their dismay with past haircuts, but because they’re smiling and not visibly upset, you barely notice. Confidence can make anyone – and anything – look good.

The great thing about hair is that is grows! Waiting for it to grow seems like a daunting task, but time flies by and soon you’ll see yourself back in the salon chair, waiting for a fresh, new look. Tip: If you feel like it’s time to break free from your current salon, find out the best way to break up with your stylist.

Walking down the aisle of your local gym’s locker room isn’t exactly strutting down the runway in Milan, but there is one common sight: the ponytail. Ponytails are popping up everywhere, from fashion shows to the Oscars red carpet, but have you ever given thought to what type of ponytail you wear says about you?

Classic ponytail
A ponytail just below the crown in the center of your head, it gives off a laid-back, easy-going vibe. You’re less concerned about “styling” your hair, and more focused on keeping it out of the way, sitting back and relaxing.

High ponytail
A lot of people commented on how Reese Witherspoon looked like a Barbie Doll with her updo at the Oscars – she radiated the youthful exuberance of one of her most famous characters, Elle Woods in Legally Blonde. The high ponytail definitely screams young, fun, and flirty.

Low ponytail
A low ponytail at the nape of your neck is a very professional, clean, chic look (unless you’re Tom Brady, in which case, people will think the exact opposite!). In general, low ponytails seem more elegant and conservative. A low ponytail gathered at the side is a more romantic variation of the look, especially if it’s a little messy and you have some face framing tendrils or bangs.

What ponytail do you like the best? Do you think about what type of ponytail you wear when you’re getting ready, or does it not matter to you?

If the legions of Bieber fans hired Shakespeare to wax poetically on the subject, he would write, “For never was a story of more woe/Than of Bieber and the hair he let go.”

In fact, Zap2it mentioned how they saw tweets that said Bieber lost thousands of followers after debuting his new hair style. Whether that’s true or not, one thing is certain: it seems like most people miss his signature combed-forward, floppy hair.

Bieber isn’t alone—Taylor Swift’s pin straight locks and Kate Gosselin’s long extensions had people talking for days. Although famous stars have much more exposure when they get a new haircut, it’s a situation that many people go through.

Have you ever had a new haircut that no one seemed to have liked? Or a style that elicited such varied opinions? Let us know!

In a segment called, ‘Making Stuff: Smarter,” they featured some of the many accomplishments of Dr. Bob Langer, Key Advisor to Living Proof and Institute Professor at MIT.
While the Mayor didn’t get his wish (the MIT scientists concluded that using ‘chemical’ means of removing snow would be impractical and economically unfeasible), it reminded us how people look to MIT as the place to find solutions to their most pressing issues.

Now that the Academy Award nominations are out, we get to see who will be attending one of the biggest style events of the year! While finding out who will walk home with the Best Actress is nice, we’re all dying to see what the biggest and brightest stars are going to wear. For us, it’s all about the hair!

Most anticipated hairstyle: Natalie Portman
When you’re the favorite to win Best Actress at the Oscars, you want to look as memorable as the moment itself. Natalie Portman went for a classic French Twist at the Golden Globes so we’re expecting something a little more old school Hollywood glamour for this occasion. When Kate Winslet won her Academy Award in 2008, she channelled Grace Kelly; will Natalie channel Audrey Hepburn?

Most bizarre hairstyle: Helena Bonham Carter
Recently, the Best Supporting Actress nominee told People Magazine that she loves having fun with fashion, no matter what people say of her eccentric style. Needless to say, we don’t expect her to “clean up” for the Academy Awards with an elaborate updo. For Hollywood’s biggest night, we’re expecting Hollywood’s biggest hair: wild, loose, and amazingly curly!

Most classic hairstyle: Nicole Kidman
Nicole Kidman is no stranger to the Academy Awards . As a result, we’ve been lucky to witness the many different looks and styles Kidman has rocked over the years. We’re happy she’s back to her natural red color, and we’re expecting her to show it off by wearing it down, sleek, and straight.

Breakout style icon: Jennifer Lawrence
Not many people saw Winter’s Bone despite the good reviews, but Jennifer Lawrence’s performance was so impressive that it garnered her an Oscar nomination at the young age of 20. With her long, blond hair, we’re expecting her to play up her youth and go for romantic, cascading waves.

These are just some of our predictions, but we want to hear what you think! Who are you looking forward to seeing the most on the red carpet? Do you agree or disagree with any of our predictions? Let us know!

When looking for a hairbrush, you’ll most likely notice that the brushes are categorized into two basic bristle types: boar bristles and nylon bristles.

Boar bristles are typically densely packed and incredibly resilient, making them ideal for straightening or brushing through thick or coarse hair.

Nylon bristles are recommended for those with very fine or fragile hair. They are more flexible so they can glide through fine hair and won’t pull too much at tangles.

Basic Brush Types

Round barrel brushes
We recommend using a round barrel brush if you want body and volume from your blow dry. Choose the best bristle based on the information given above, and the barrel size based on your hair length: the longer your hair, the larger the barrel.

Generally, smaller barrels will allow you to add some curl to your blow out while larger barrels will give you a smoother look.

Paddle brushes
Paddle brushes are best for everyday brushing, but can also be used to straighten long hair. These brushes have more surface area, so they create a smoother, straighter look (tip: use a paddle brush before flat ironing for an easier straightening experience). Paddle brushes are not recommended for those who want to add volume, or style layers.

Look for paddle brushes with cushion (where the bristles are secured into a rubber or synthetic pad) if you have fine or fragile hair. The cushioned base creates more ‘give’ for hair to slide through without pulling or tearing.

Vented brushes
Vented brushes have openings that allow air to flow throughout the hair, adding body and speeding up the drying time. These are recommended for those in search of a quick, basic blow out. Don’t use them if you want to straighten or curl your hair, as they tend not to hold hair as well as other brushes.

Now that both Full Thickening Cream and Full Thickening Mousse is available for all your hair thickening needs, here are some extra tips and tricks on achieving that full, voluminous look. Creating lasting volume and thickness is dependent on many factors. Co-founders and professional stylists Ward Stegerhoek and Mitch DeRosa recommend the following tips to achieve ultimate fullness:

Layers

The most volume will be achieved if you have some layers in your hair, whatever the length is. Make sure to ask your stylist to give you some layers if volume is your top concern.

Don’t Overly Condition the Hair

You certainly want to have your hair well hydrated, but be careful not to excessively moisturize with heavy masks as this can tend to weigh the hair down, especially if your conditioners have lots of oils and silicones. This weight may counteract the benefits of a volumizer or thickener, like Full.

Style with Heat

Applying Full to clean hair and blowing it dry will maximize your volume. Air drying will give you texture and definition, but usually not as much volume as heat styling.

Remember That Different Products Do Different Things

Full is a thickening product; it is not a root lifter. Cocktail Full with Full Root Lifting Spray if that is the look you want. And experiment — have fun with your hair until you find your favorite style.

Coloring helps

For those of you who color or highlight your hair, this will give it added texture and will help give the appearance of more volume.

It seemed like there was a new beauty trend every other week in 2010. In no particular order, here are some of the hair-related stories of 2010 that created a lot of excitement, for better or for worse.

Embracing the Outrageous

Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Ke$ha donned bizarre outfits well before 2010 but this year, they experimented quite a bit with their hairstyles, as well. Whether it was Gaga dying her hair gray, Perry’s neon-blue wig, or Ke$ha’s faux-hawk, these ladies definitely took their hairstyles to infinity and beyond.

Willow Smith’s grand debut

It takes a lot to make a dent in the entertainment industry, especially if your father is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. Willow Smith not only made a dent, she practically took the house down with her hair-pride anthem, “Whip My Hair.” Plan on hearing a lot more Willow Smith in 2011.

The Return of the Redheads

In 2010, redheads were definitely had more fun. Christina Hendricks burned up the silver screen once again as the fiery Joan Harris on Mad Men. Emma Stone’s career took off, after starring in Easy A and hosting Saturday Night Live. Even Scarlett Johansson got on the fun and dyed her signature blond locks auburn for her butt-kicking role in Iron Man 2.

Pixie Mania

Who in Hollywood didn’t chop off their hair for the adorable pixie cut? Carey Mulligan, Michelle Williams, and Halle Berry are just some of the women who opted for the gamine look in 2010.

Emma Watson’s Mane Magic

Speaking of the ubiquitous pixie cut, Emma Watson caused quite a stir when she debuted her cute, cropped ‘do on Facebook. 2010 marked Watson’s final year on the Harry Potter film set as the brainy, bushy-haired, Hermione Granger. She not only left behind her spell books and wand, she left behind her long, wavy locks as well.

Sesame Street’s Still Got It

It was definitely a year for hair anthems. Sesame Street head writer Joey Mazzarino wrote, “I Love My Hair” for his adopted daughter and we’re glad he did. The song inspired everyone who watched it to nod and sing along. Looks like Sesame Street is still educating us, after all these years.
